Erectile Dysfunction Drugs May Cause Vision Loss

Public Citizen, a U.S. consumer group, cautions that popular drugs used for erectile dysfunction may lead to blindness.

The group has petitioned the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to add a black box warning to three commonly prescribed drugs - Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. In their petition letter, Public Citizen notes that Viagra accounts for 19% of the total cases of ischemic optic neuropathy (vision loss) contained in the FDA's adverse event database. That is more than double the percentage of the next most often-reported drug.

Consumer group: Put strong warning on impotence aids

WASHINGTON - A prominent consumer advocacy group is calling for the government to add the most serious of warnings to the labels of Viagra and other impotence drugs, noting that some users have gone blind.

Public Citizen on Thursday petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to add black-box warnings to the labels of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, as well as the hypertension drug Revatio, which is similar to Viagra.

FDA Investigates Blindness in Viagra Users

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports that the impotence drug Viagra -- and others like it -- can cause a rare kind of sudden blindness.

The agency has received at least 43 reports of sudden, irreversible vision loss among users of the drugs, most of them taking Viagra. Agency officials said yesterday that they are in talks with Pfizer Inc., the maker of Viagra, about adding the new information to its product label.
